Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) involves all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Sometimes it is also referred to as female circumcision, female genital cutting and Sunna (NSPCC). FGM has no health benefits and internationally it is recognised as a violation of human rights. The practice is illegal in the UK and can cause severe damaging effects to physical and emotional health.
